Importing Audio

Have audio recordings in other apps that you’d like to transcribe? Whisper Memos can import audio files from anywhere on your iPhone and process them just like your regular recordings. You get the same transcription, summaries, and all the features you’re used to.

Whisper Memos supports most common audio formats:

  • M4A - iPhone’s default recording format
  • MP3 - Universal audio format
  • WAV - Uncompressed audio
  • AAC - Advanced Audio Coding
  • FLAC - Lossless audio
  • OGG - Open source format

If you have a recording in another format, most audio apps can export to one of these formats.

There are four ways to import audio into Whisper Memos. Choose whichever fits your workflow best.

The quickest way to import a single file.

  1. Open the app where your audio file is stored
  2. Find the audio file and copy it to your clipboard (usually through a long-press menu or share options)
  3. Open Whisper Memos
  4. The app will detect the audio in your clipboard and show an import prompt
  5. Tap Import to add it to your memos

This works great for quick imports from the Voice Memos app, Files, or any app that lets you copy audio.

Use the iOS share sheet to send audio directly to Whisper Memos.

  1. Open the app containing your audio file
  2. Find the audio and tap the Share button
  3. Scroll through the share sheet and tap Whisper Memos
  4. The app will open and begin importing your file

The share extension works from almost any app - Voice Memos, Files, email attachments, messaging apps, and more.

For audio files in the Files app, you can open them directly in Whisper Memos.

  1. Open the Files app on your iPhone
  2. Navigate to your audio file
  3. Long-press the file to open the context menu
  4. Tap Open With or Share
  5. Select Whisper Memos from the list

This is especially useful when you have audio files synced via iCloud Drive or downloaded from the web.

Browse and select files directly from within Whisper Memos.

  1. Open Whisper Memos
  2. On the memos list screen, tap the + button
  3. A file picker will appear showing your device storage
  4. Navigate to your audio file and tap to select it
  5. The file will be imported and processing will begin

The file picker gives you access to your entire device storage, including iCloud Drive, Downloads, and folders from other apps.

Once imported, the audio is processed exactly like a regular recording - you get transcription, summaries, reminders, email delivery, and everything else you’re used to.

  • Large files: Importing works with files up to 90 minutes long, same as regular recordings
  • Original quality: Whisper Memos uses the original audio for transcription, so quality is preserved
  • Offline files: Make sure the file is downloaded locally before importing (especially for iCloud files)
